What is an occlusal guard?

An occlusal guard, also known as a night guard or a bite splint, is a dental device that is used to protect the teeth and jaw from the harmful effects of grinding or clenching the teeth, also known as bruxism.

The occlusal guard is typically made out of a custom-fitted, flexible plastic material that is worn over the teeth either during sleep or throughout the day to prevent damage to the teeth and jaw joints. It helps to alleviate symptoms such as headaches, jaw pain, tooth sensitivity, and tooth wear caused by bruxism.

Occlusal guards can be obtained through a dentist who will take impressions of the teeth to create a custom-fit guard. Over-the-counter occlusal guards are also available, but they may not fit as well or provide the same level of protection as a custom-made guard.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of the occlusal guard are important to prevent bacteria buildup and ensure its effectiveness in protecting the teeth and jaw. Additionally, it is important to consult with a dentist regularly to monitor the condition of the guard and make any necessary adjustments.
